Welcome..To..The Terror On Counter-Top Lane
Don’t change the channel or go to another site…there are no blood and guts here, only the nightmare of changing the counter top in our kitchen. TWICE…I might add.
Hey everyone…Kenny here to tell you the story of the counter top nightmare we have had in our kitchen. You see, our house was built in 1979 and as you can guess all the decor was of the same era. Flowery wall paper – tacky wood paneling – walls that are paper thin – plastic sinks and so on. But, we love the place and we are trying to make it home…despite all the problems, a lot of it we have already upgraded.
For some reason, everyone tells us that our home looks like a log house. With the cedar siding and metal roof I guess it could fool anyone. Regina and I have always wanted a log cabin and I suppose this is as close as it gets til we hit the lotto, ha ha! With that in mind we started working on the inside of the home to get that log cabin feeling.
The kitchen counter was in pretty bad shape when we moved in. We doctored it and babied it for some years until we decided that we had to do something. They were originally yellow…you heard me right… BABY SHIT YELLOW! At some point in time the previous owners had the tops recovered in Formica. GRAY Formica…yukie-poop (no pun intended)…which started to peel off. Soooo…the brave soles we are, started to just peel the rest of it off. Bad idea! After peeling it all off, 1 day, and cleaning all the glue off, about 2 days, we now have YELLOW counters everywhere!!!!!
Being the handyman I am, I started checking out different ways to cover the counters at a very reasonable price. Being the cheap-skate I am, I went for the Rust-Oleum Countertop Coating. I mean after all they are a trusted quality product since 1921. “That’s what it says on the box.” And the price was fairly cheap. I will refrain from using certain curse words at this time, but, this product STINK’S (again, no pun intended)!!!!!!
Looked pretty for a couple of weeks…then…BOOM, the bottom fell out of the toilet, boy am I on a roll! More puns, oh my! All kinds of scratches and peeling started appearing and we just want to pull our hair out…if I had any…HA HA!
We put up with it for a couple of years until I ran across a video on Youtube. The video was called…Transforming/Painting Countertops – DIY! and was by Nancy Jean. Watching the video and the thought of painting the counter-tops really lit my idea buttons and we were off to the paint store.
I tried this procedure on a small table we have on the back porch with some paint we have had left over from other projects. I have to say it came out pretty damn good and the wife fell in love with it at first sight… NOW that was a large plus!
Sooooo…I jumped on the counters in the kitchen. Now it took a little while to do this job because I wanted at least 5 coats of polyurethane on top of the counters to be sure they were protected.
O.K. Lets bring this story to an end, shall we? I used paint that we had left from other projects because they were the colors we liked. I used Nancy’s basic procedure to get the look we wanted. Today the wife is happy and I am happy and the Terror at Counter-Top Lane has been put to rest.
Here are some pics of the counters. I wanted to make a video, but I didn’t want to show my Brad Pitt side.
Oh yea…I almost forgot…stay tuned for our next project. Laying down 600 sq. ft. of wood flooring.
( Just shoot me now and get it over because now I want to redo the cabinets too!).
Don’t forget to like us on Facebook and Twitter and join our Saturday news letter..up there..at the top.. to keep up with the latest recipes if we can ever finish all the left-overs that we had, way too many of, from company and the such.
Well Wayne and Donna…Think you can handle it?
