Cough Remedy With Turnips

Kenny and I hit the thrift store the other day and one of the few things we came home with was The Vegetable Box! I had seen it but never checked out what it contained but husband did and was like a little kid when he showed it to me. It’s a cardboard box that contains 20 books full of recipes for lotsa different veggies from artichokes to zucchini authored by Keda Black and Catherine Quevremont. It also has cut-outs of the different veggies to use as book markers for each individual vegetable that stick up to let you know what book you are looking for. It also has the original price on the box of $34.95 and we only paid a buck for it and it is in excellent condition. I haven’t been through the whole set as of yet and one of the first books I pulled out was on turnips and potatoes because both vegetables are a staple in our home for Thanksgiving.

Always in the market for homemade remedies for any kind of ailments our old bones may have, this recipe really struck a chord with me, especially with cold and flu season here. I do make my own cough syrup with Karo syrup, vodka and peppermint extract and it works pretty good and is cheap to make compared to store bought cough syrup without all the junk added to it. I can’t wait to see how this compares as a cough inhibitor and how it tastes (Kenny kinda stuck his nose up like I was going to give him some castor oil or something). The recipe here is called Cough Linctus which means cough medicine, a new one on me but then again, I’m not up on medical terms as I stay as far away from doctors as possible.

Cough Remedy With Turnips
  • 1 bunch of young turnips, very thinly sliced
  • 4 tbsp sugar
  1. Place the turnip slices in a bowl and sprinkle with the sugar.
  2. Cover and let stand overnight.
  3. By morning, the turnips will have produced a juice, which is a natural remedy against coughs.
  4. Strain the juice through a strainer and then discard the slices of turnip.


They don’t say if you should refrigerate it after it’s made or how much it makes but I’m game to make maybe a half batch to try! If anyone out there has tried this before I get to make it, please feel free to drop me a line and give me your results, I’d love to hear from you……………….
