Kentucky Derby And Cinco de Mayo

What will you be cooking and drinking for the Kentucky Derby and Cinco de Mayo?

Since starting cooking-with-mama, I was surprised at just how many recipes we have posted that are Mexican or Southern in nature!

For the Kentucky Derby, we posted the Kentucky Derby Pie, one of my favorites and now I give you a Mint Julep recipe found in my old Mr. Boston recipe book from 1935. Now I’m not sure if this is the original cocktail used in Kentucky, but it sounded pretty good to me.

1 spoonful powdered sugar. Put about 4 springs of mint into a tumbler. Add a teaspoonful of water. Then muddle well. Fill mixing glass with ice. Add 1 Jigger Old Mr. Boston Whiskey. Stir well and top with dash of Rum. Garnish with fruit and mint. Sprinkle mint with powdered sugar. Serve in a Tom Collins glass. That’s the way they wrote it and personally, sounds a little confusing to me, but then again, who am I to say! I have already picked my winning horse for the 138 th Kentucky Derby and need to finish up here so I can see my horse cross the finish line first!

Now for Cinco de Mayo day. Just to give you a few heads-up, my personal favorite is the Homemade Sangria that I have been making for it seems likes decades; oops, I have been doing that! That will be on the menu tonight for sure. We have posted homemade taco seasoning mix, Mexicali fried rice, Mexicali omelet, salsa chicken for the chicken lovers, Mexican egg rolls, Mexican chicken with jalapeno rice and Mexican rubbed back ribs which seemed to generate a lot of attention.

These are just some of the recipes that we love and enjoy! Hope you will check them out if you haven’t already………Happy Cinco de Mayo to all our Mexican friends out there who are celebrating and for those of you who like to pick the Kentucky Derby winner, Good Luck! And remember, you don’t have to be Mexican or from Kentucky to enjoy either Cinco de Mayo or the horse races, enjoy them both and have some sangria with dinner and a mint julep with dessert!
